Self Portrait

A portrait’s purpose is to transmit the essence of an object or individual. This essence does not refer strictly to the physical appearance, but can be captured in many different ways. We are all composed of layers of emotions, culture, traditions, decisions, and aspirations that have very little to do with appearance. This collection describes who I am. It’s meant to allow the viewer to see my world through my eyes, my routine, and my passions, one of which is baking. The graphic composition of each image also speaks to specific emotions, preferences and personal experiences.

Flaneur (Atlanta)

Flaneur is a french word that refers to a ‘stroller’ or the act of strolling around. In this case, the word takes a meaning of wonder. As I aimlessly walked and discovered the street of Atlanta, I was able to capture different scenes that depict normal, everyday actions. These actions by themselves don’t seem to portray anything out of the ordinary, but together they capture the essence of this area of the city and it’s residents. The collection can be described as my portrait of the city, the one I was able to experience.

My Savannah

Savannah is old and new, inviting and secretive, peaceful and dangerous. Savannah is full of contradictions that make it as beautiful, enticing and welcoming as it is. I have lived in Savannah for the past year and the city has lovingly mothered me and rapidly become ‘home’. In preparing for my move I had heard and read as much as I could about the place, but nothing prepared me for what I experienced. Only walking aimlessly can you find hidden historic treasures, run into amazing parks, meet incredible people, and understand all the layers that make up its character. No individual place can provide the experience of the city. Savannah can’t be visited, it must be experienced.

Although at first the project aimed to be a collection of street life in Savannah it evolved into a selection of very personal images. This collection is not about the city, but about my relationship with it. Each of the photographs represents a different aspect of my life here: my home, my work, my school, my studios, my hobbies and my chosen spots for selfreflection. Although they capture different spaces and each of them provoke different emotions in me, the Savannahian environment weaves them together. Nature, light, lively colors, history, complexity, simplicity and serenity are at the core of each image as they embrace Savannah’s contradictions and my own.

Personless Portrait

My brother went to college in Atlanta and I had the experience to visit the city ten years after he had left the it. In order to capture a personless portrait, I decided to visit the places that he visited and try to imagine the life he might have lived. This collection captures places he continuously visited, but through compositions and details that he might not have seen. It serves as an integration of our very different perspectives and experiences.
